The Doshas
Dosha- HUMAN CONSTITUTION
The five elements manifest in the human body as three principles or humors, known as Tridosha:
- AIR + ETHER = VATA
- FIRE + WATER = PITTA
- EARTH + WATER = KAPHA
Together they govern all biological, physiological and functions - when out of balance they contribute to the disease process.
To live we need each of the elements, but there is usually a dominant quality in each one of us.
These fall under two forms. Your Prakruti, your constitution at birth, and your Vikruti, or conditional constitution which is state of being at the current moment.
I like to think of your Prakruti and your innate, unique genetic makeup or what your body will look like and what it may be prone towards, and your vikruti as all the environmental and external experiences that shape you into the person you are at this moment. Your Vikruti may vary due to age, seasons, lifestyle, stress levels and many other factors.
Both are equally important, however in the Wellness Spa space, we are always going to focus on the existing concern at that time, and how to bring it into balance.
The best way to determine your unique constitution is to see an Ayurvedic Doctor, who will do a pulse diagnosis as well as a thorough consultation, however we do have a basic guide on our website that can be found on the link below.

Each of the Doshas have traits or qualities (gunas) listed below:
Vata- Dry, cold, light, irregular, mobile, rough, quick
Pitta-Oily, hot, light, intense, fluid, acidic, liquid, sharp
Kapha-Oily, cold, heavy, stable, viscous, smooth, dull
These same qualities are used to return the skin to its state of balance by looking across the triangle below.
For example, oily is listed as a quality for both Kapha and Pitta, so it is across the bottom line.
To balance Vata, it is best to use Oil. The same goes for other qualities shared by more than one Dosha
